Kate Brennan

Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist and Counsellor

Biography

Kate's experience with children and adolescents spans over the course of 16 years. Kate works from an Integrative Psychotherapeutic Approach. Working this way allows her to apply interventions from a range of modalities that are compatible with the client's own subjective narrative. No two individuals respond in the same way to one event and Kate introduces a skilled flexibility in her work to meet specific client needs. She also specialises in crisis intervention, suicide, deliberate self-harm and trauma, using evidence based approaches to inform her practice.

Kate's work with children and adolescents is always developmentally appropriate and in the context of the systems they are developing in. Working with parents, schools and any other relevant support is imperative in order to maximise the client's potential to thrive in all of their developing structures. She works with parents, psycho-educating on the highly transitional and developmental stages of infancy, childhood and adolescence. Reparative dialogue that makes sense of the functionality of anxiety, depression, anger and conduct issues, will harness family strategies that can alleviate symptomatic distress. Although there is no specific timespan on the therapy journey, the assessment typically takes place over the course of the first two sessions, with regular reviews thereafter. The completion of the assessment will define the therapeutic pathway.

Kate's career has translated across many therapeutic settings, including the position of Senior Psychotherapist at a crisis intervention center, Group Facilitator at a rehabilitation center, Team Leader at a  residential care setting and a school setting for children on the Autism Spectrum at which she was a Senior Tutor.
